A few ministers from the Madhesi Front are also likely to be sworn in today.

Bhattarai elected new Prime Minister of Nepal

The legislature parliament on Sunday elected UCPN (Maoist) vice chairman Dr Baburam Bhattarai as the 35th Prime Minister of Nepal.

UCPN (Maoist) leader Baburam Bhattarai with party chairman Pushpa Kamal …

Dr Bhattarai is also the second prime minister of the country from the Maoist party since the peace process began in 2006. He got elected to the top executive post after defeating his rival, Nepali Congress parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Poudel, in the election held at the parliament Sunday evening.

Bhattarai received 340 votes while Poudel received 235 votes. Altogether 575 lawmakers participated in the voting.

In addition to his party UCPN (Maoist) which has 237 lawmakers in the 595-member Constituent Assembly, United Democratic Madhesi Front with 65 lawmakers and few fringe parties had also supported Bhattarai.

The prospects of Bhattarai began looking brighter after the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF), which has a decisive voting bloc pledged to vote for him earlier in the morning.

NC’s PM candidate Ram Chandra Poudel was supported by the UML and few other parties in the voting, but it was far lower to put up a strong challenge to Bhattarai.

Voting for the Prime Minister had started in the legislature parliament after the lawmakers from different parties including the independent ones finished presenting their arguments on the PM candidates.

Pro-monarchist Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal (RPP-Nepal), which has been organising series of protests demanding dissolution of the Constituent Assembly, boycotted the election process.

The election of Bhattarai’s to the top executive post has provided a new ray of hope to the people of the country for constitution and lasting peace especially considering, as political observers say, the “flexibility” shown by his party on their constitution and peace road map floated on Thursday.

Erstwhile Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal’s six-month old government had come to an end earlier this month after he tendered his resignation on August 14.

Baburam Bhattarai was born in a village called Belbas in Khoplang VDC of Gorkha District on May 26, 1954. He was born in a low – middle class peasant family and completed his secondary school education from Amar Jyoti Janata Secondary School in Luintel, Gorkha. He scored the highest marks among total examinees in SLC examination conducted in 1970 and topped the I.Sc board again in Amrit Science Campus, Kathmandu. He later completed his PhD degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi) in 1986.[3] His Ph.D. thesis was later published as a book “The Nature of Underdevelopment and Regional Structure of Nepal- A Marxist Analysis”.

He had earlier served as the finance minister in the first Maoist government led by party chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal following the Constituent Assembly election through which the Maoists emerged as the largest party in the CA. nepalnews.com

Kakani

Kakani is another good location for viewing the mountain scenery. Only two hours north-west of Kathmandu, one can see the mountain landscape of central Nepal, a vast collection of majestic peaks stretching from Ganesh Himal to the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. There is an unusually perfect blending of the imposing mountain scenery with the more sylvan environment of the lower valleys. Rhododendrons growing wild on the mountain slopes begin to bloom in late winter and stay in bloom for several months, giving the village even more charm.NTB

Dr Bharat Rawat, involved in Bhattarai’s treatment, informed journalists that Bhattarai breathed his last at 11.26 pm, Friday. He was at critical stage since Wednesday.

Bhattarai was admitted to the hospital some three weeks ago after his health condition worsened.

Bhattarai is a founding member of Nepali Congress who became Prime Minister twice. He fought along with BP Koirala, Subarna Shumsere, Ganeshman Singh and Girija Prasad Koirala for democracy in 1950s. He also became the first Speaker of Nepal’s first ever parliament.

Bhattarai was jailed for eight years after the royal coup in 1960. After the restoration of democracy in 1990, Bhattarai became the Prime Minister of the interim government, in charge of making the new constitution and holding the first election.

Bhattarai was elected Nepali Congress president by its general convention in 1992. Before this, he was the acting president of the party for a long time after BP Koirala passed away.

He won the election, first time ever in his life, to the House of Representatives from Parsa in 1999 and became Prime Minister for the second time.

After his government was toppled after one year, he remained inactive from politics. He had been living with his aides in a government provided facility in Lalitpur. nepalnews.com

Maha Shivaratri

Maha Shivaratri

Shivaratri meaning the night of Lord Shiva is one of the major festivals of Nepal.  Hundreds of thousands of followers from different parts of country and India crowd the Pashupatinath temple – one of the holiest shrines of the Hindus in Kathmandu to worship Lord Shiva on his birthday. Lord Shiva is considered as the guardian and protector of everything that exists. Colorful and naked sadhus, the wandering sages who emulate Shiva with ashes over their bodies, give lectures to disciples, meditate, or practice yoga. Special attendance camps are set in the courtyards of the temples situated at the opposite bank, where non-Hindus are also free to wander.  The curious can witness some rather interesting yogic demonstrations there.  Children collect donations from passersby since the morning to buy necessary items to prepare holy meal and bonfire during the evening. People make bonfire at junctions and homes at the evening and warm themselves sitting by the fire eating Prasad the holy meal.

Year 2011 starts with healthy growth in international tourist arrivals

The anticipated performance of tourism industry in 2011 is firmly confirmed by the steady rise of arrivals in the very beginning of the month.

The figures released by Immigration Office, Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) reveal that visitor arrivals in the month of January 2011, compared to the same month last year, have increased by 26.2% to 32914.

All regions have shown positive growth in the first month of 2011. India which constitutes the major market of Nepal, has recorded positive growth of 35.5%. In the SAARC region, arrivals from Bangladesh and Pakistan have registered positive growth by 10.3% and 13.3% respectively. However, the arrivals from Srilanka declined by 47.5%. In aggregate the South Asian segment has registered a positive growth of 28.8%.

Arrivals from Asia (other than South Asia) have also recorded positive growth of 36.6% in aggregate with all markets showing improved performance. The visitor’s arrivals from China have increased significantly by 79.6%. Similarly, the arrivals from Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and South Korea have also increased by 8.2%, 51.9%, 29.1%, 3.2%and 20.3% respectively.

Nepal has enjoyed a sustained positive growth in the international visitor arrivals since June 2009 and the trend continues even in year 2011. These figures reflect rising confidence among visitors and tour operators to Nepal.  The sustained positive growth will hopefully be effective in achieving the target of Nepal Tourism Year 2011.

A total of 40,507 foreign tourists departed from TIA in January 2011. The number of Nepalese arrivals stood at 64,755 while 72,100 Nepalese departed from TIA in January 2011.NTB
